Support Underground Powerlines

S.U.P. - Support Underground Powerlines is an action group formed in the Autumn of 2000 in the North Roscommon/Sligo region. The ESB are prepairing the bases to erect a 63 km long power line through some of the most scenic and unspoilt landscape remaining in the North West. The ESB have confirmed that they have the expertese and ability to supply this power via underground lines.

The main problem from an ESB point of view, is simply that underground cables are more expensive, or so they say. We believe, however, when all factors are taken into consideration, that the underground option makes both economic and practical sense. We believe the construction of 63 km of 123 ft steel towers across one of the most beautiful and unspoilt landscapes remaining in the west of Ireland is an incredibly short-sighted idea which can only be detremental to this beautiful landscape.
In fact we now belive that the ESB has already spent more on this 'project' than it would have cost to bury it!

ESB applied for planning permission just before Christmas 2000.

It is now evident that this line will in all probabilty end up buried.
