Welcome to energy-matters-amp.

This website has been set up by volunteers from the various Community Groups along the Flagford to Srannanagh/Ballysumaghan 220/110kv proposed ESB power-line route (Carrick on Shannon to Sligo). We have been in operation since May 2000.
From the outset we all agreed that we would not be against something just for the sake of it. We had to for something else. Everyone is agreed that there should be reinforcement of the National Grid. Where we and the ESB differ, is on the method of delivery of power. The more that we investigated, the more we realised that this vision of an alternative method of generation and delivery was realistic, achievable, economic and environmentally friendly. Hence the name AMP.

AMP tries to address 2 objectives.

  • One is presenting the case on what has happened to date with our efforts to get this specific power-line put underground. It does not fill us with confidence in the fiscal management of our Decision Makers.
  • The second objective is to present alternatives to the existing methods of generation and delivery of power. Much of the information is already available, yet there seems to be an unwillingness to address the issues. It is our contention that rather than continue with old, discredited, costly answers that alienate people, our leading suppliers of Energy; State, semi-State and Private should be working in partnership with the People.

Please read on and see what you think.

About AMP

AMP, is the collective of three Community groups along the Flagford to Shrannagh- Ballysumaghan 220/110kV Proposed Powerline Route. (Carrick on Shannon to Sligo)

The line would be 56 kilometres with over 240 Lattice Steel tower Pylons many over 30 meters high (100 feet high) passing through one of the countries most precious treasure trove's of archaeological, landscape and cultural heritage. To needlessly destroy the
'golden goose' and also the environment and communities and create a 'sterile corridor', and over a Billion euros of devaluation and misery to a healthy rural people, is a thoroughly bad idea. Not supported by need matched to sensible solution, taking into account regional requirements and an integrated planning approach.

The project was granted planning permission, and is starting even thought there are many fundamental outstanding issues.

Including a Hearing in Europe regarding
Petition 1149/2003 Submitted by AMP.

Also a report is being prepared by the ombudsman regarding repeated failure by Roscommon Co Council to reply to letters.

AMP's submission to Europe was dealing with Environmental Aspects.
There are many other unresolved issues, Need, The Common Good, Environment Health, Undergrounding....etc.

Reasons behind AMP's Petition 11459/2003 in Relation to ESB's proposed 220 kV project in Sligo and Roscommon.

The submission was on environmental grounds, however from planning point of view, AMP's aim was to examine the proposed project from a pro-development point of view. That is development related to the power generation and transmission needs of the region, from a 'best practice-integrated planning' viewpoint.
